Some can also detect the level of two distinct liquid phases, this is referred to as Interface Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Level indicators can also function as transmitters if they have a 4-20 mA output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are divided into several types, depending on the characteristics of the liquid and the tank. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Glass Level Gauges: a glass window allows the visual inspection of the liquid inside the container. Reflective glass can show the liquid as black to distinguish it from steam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Magnetic Level Gauges: a float inside a steel chamber is magnetically coupled to an external indicator.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bicolor Level Gauges: a special geometry of the instrument body and LED illuminators display the liquid as green and the steam as red through the viewing windows.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resistive, Capacitive, or Multi-probe Level Indicators: ceramic probes detect conductivity difference between liquid and steam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Float and Tape Level Gauges: a float is connected with a tape to an indicator, which can be a graduated scale or a dial with a pointer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Magnetostrictive Level Transmitters: a steel rod contains a wire that generates a magnetic field. A float with an internal magnet interacts with this field, causing a wire torsion that indicates float position.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reed Level Transmitters: a steel rod contains reed contacts. A float with a magnet closes these contacts as it moves, changing the overall resistance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Radar Level Indicators: an antenna emits electromagnetic waves; the instrument measures the time it takes for the wave to reflect off the liquid.
